Australian lawyer Kate Gibson joins Duterte’s defense team at ICC

Australian lawyer Kate Gibson has been appointed as associate counsel for former President Rodrigo Duterte in his case before the International Criminal Court (ICC)), according to an ICC Registry filing released on Tuesday, May 19.

The filing showed that Gibson was appointed as associate counsel by Duterte’s lead lawyer, Peter Haynes, and officially accepted the position on May 18, 2026.

Gibson worked with Haynes on the ICC case against Congolese politician Jean-Pierre Bemba, who was acquitted on appeal in 2018.

Aside from the ICC, Gibson also appeared before other international tribunals, including the Special Court for Sierra Leone, UN Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and the Kosovo Specialist Chambers.

Gibson previously served as president of the Association of Defence Counsel Practicing before the International Courts and Tribunals and has also worked as a legal consultant for the International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar.

According to her profile at Doughty Street Chambers, Gibson currently represents several Rohingya victims and continues to work on international human rights and criminal law cases.
