Health Secretary Jose Brittanio “Brix” Pujalte Jr. resigned Monday after only 28 days in office, with Malacañang citing health reasons amid complaints over a P3.225-billion tuberculosis drug procurement and allegations of casino gambling.
Palace press officer Claire Castro said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. accepted Pujalte’s resignation and appointed Dr. Edwin Mercado, President and CEO of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth), as his replacement.
Pujalte’s short tenure was marked by controversy over the suspension of the TB drug procurement. Health advocates had asked the Office of the Ombudsman to investigate him, alleging that the delay could affect public health. Pujalte denied the allegations and said the procurement required further review to ensure the medicines’ quality, safety, and compliance with government rules.
Pujalte also denied allegations that he frequently gambled in casinos and used aliases to enter casino establishments in Parañaque City.
Mercado, a US-trained orthopedic surgeon with 35 years of hospital management experience, will lead the DOH and also serve as ex officio chair of the PhilHealth board.
Castro said Marcos instructed Mercado to prioritize the health and welfare of Filipinos.
