MANILA, Philippines — Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV has been removed as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Basic Education following a leadership shakeup in the chamber, ending his 10-month tenure.
Aquino confirmed his removal through a Facebook post on May 16, saying the change in position would not affect his commitment to addressing the country’s long-standing education challenges.
The political reorganization also moved the lawmaker from the majority bloc to the minority.
“Kasabay ng pagbabago ng liderato sa Senado, hindi na po tayo chairman ng Committee on Basic Education,” Aquino said.
“Sa loob ng sampung buwan, ginawa po natin ang ating mandato, tinupad ang mga pangako, at nagtrabaho para po sa inyo,” he added.
Aquino assumed the post on July 28, 2025, after joining the Senate majority bloc. Senator Francis "Kiko" N. Pangilinan , who also joined the majority bloc, took over the Agriculture Committee.
The leadership change halted Aquino’s direct oversight of several education measures, including the Classroom Building Acceleration Program Act and the Angat Sweldo para sa Guro Act.
Before the shakeup, Aquino’s panel spearheaded a seven-point education agenda and raised concerns over alleged misuse of government funds in classroom construction projects.
Despite his short stint, the senator cited legislative gains, including the proposed ₱1.34 trillion education budget for 2026, which allocates ₱67.9 billion for classroom construction.
Under his leadership, the proposed Establishing GIDA and Last Mile Schools Act and the Curriculum Flexibility Act also advanced to the President’s desk for signature.
