The Anti-Political Dynasty Act was passed on its third and final reading by the House of Representatives on Wednesday, June 3.
The approval was marked by the House as one of the chamber's most important election reform bills in recent history.
With 267 in favor, 20 against, and 7 abstaining, lawmakers passed House Bill No. 8389 or the Anti-Political Dynasty Act, banning second-degree relatives from holding public positions.
The proposed measure aimed to implement Section 26, Article II of the 1987 Constitution, which requires the state to provide everyone an equal chance to work in public service and ban political dynasties based on how the Congress defines them.
“This measure recognizes a reality in the Philippine politics while also responding to a constitutional mandate that has remained pending for decades,” House Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” Marcos said in a statement.
He added that he wants to foster a political culture that elevates leaders based on their qualifications, capability, and the genuine confidence of the Filipino people, moving beyond family ties and familiarity.
Marcos also added that the bill targets to bring back the confidence of the public by widening the political system to more Filipinos.
