MANILA, Philippines — Members of the House prosecution on Friday said the recent leadership changes in the Senate could influence the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, as prosecutors continue preparations for the upcoming trial on May 18.
House prosecutor and San Juan Representative Bel Zamora said the team continues to prepare for the trial despite the political tension surrounding the Senate following the leadership change that replaced former Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III with Alan Peter Cayetano.
Zamora said the prosecution team is “trying not to listen to the noise” while continuing its preparations for the impeachment proceedings.
Zamora explained that House prosecutors are expected to appear before the Senate when it convenes as an impeachment court on May 18, adding that the panel may only observe the proceedings since the Articles of Impeachment have already been transmitted.
The prosecution team has also been reviewing the 2012 impeachment trial of former Chief Justice Renato Corona and organizing witnesses and legal responsibilities for the case.
The impeachment complaint against Duterte includes allegations involving the misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery, and alleged threats against government officials.
The Articles of Impeachment were formally delivered to the Senate days after the House of Representatives voted in favor of impeaching Duterte.
Despite the political controversy surrounding the Senate leadership change, House prosecutors said they are ready to carry out their constitutional duties once the impeachment trial begins.
