Amid continuing talks of another leadership shake-up in the Senate, the minority bloc has emerged in support of Senator Sherwin Gatchalian as the favored bet for presidency of the chamber.
The development comes just weeks after the Senate leadership shifted following the removal of former Senate President Tito Sotto and the election of Senator Alan Peter Cayetano to the post.
The reorganization sparked political tensions and further fueled speculations of another possible “coup” within the upper chamber.
Members of the minority bloc, particularly the group known as “Solid Bloc 11,” reportedly see Gatchalian as a senator capable of bringing stability and unity amid the continuing political divisions in the Senate.
Senator Francis Pangilinan confirmed that the bloc is considering Gatchalian as its preferred candidate should another leadership battle take place. According to him, the senator’s working relationship with both minority and majority members makes him a strong choice for the position.
Senator Panfilo Lacson also acknowledged ongoing discussions regarding the Senate leadership, saying several senators have been looking for ways to prevent further instability in the institution.
Gatchalian, however, refrained from commenting directly on the leadership issue, saying the Senate should instead concentrate on pressing concerns affecting Filipinos such as inflation, electricity prices, education, and employment.
Political observers said the senator’s name gaining support from the minority reflects the continuing movement of alliances inside the chamber following the recent leadership reshuffle.
The Senate leadership controversy intensified earlier this month after Cayetano secured enough votes to replace Sotto as Senate president.
The move drew mixed reactions from lawmakers and political groups, with some describing it as a strategic political maneuver tied to larger national issues, including discussions surrounding the possible impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Despite the growing rumors, no senator has formally moved to challenge the current leadership as of writing. Still, talks of another possible reorganization continue to spread as senators remain divided over the direction of the chamber.
Gatchalian, who has served in the Senate since 2016, is known for pushing measures related to education, energy, and economic reforms.
His name surfacing in the ongoing discussions signals the search for a more acceptable and stable leadership within the Senate amid continuing political uncertainty.
