The Philippine National Police (PNP) said that it will station more police force around the Senate amid current political tensions that could trigger protests and public disruptions close to the legislative building.
PNP Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and concerned local police units have been instructed to raise police visibility and set up strategic checkpoints across the Senate as a preventive security measure.
Nartatez emphasized that the police are still impartial and that their heightened presence near the Senate is not intended to obstruct legitimate functions.
"The PNP remains entirely apolitical. Our sole mandate here is to maintain public order, manage traffic flow, and ensure that the Senate can conduct its vital legislative functions without any external disruption," the General said.
Aside from additional police officers, the PNP is also collaborating with Senate security personnel, local government units, and traffic management officials to ensure a coordinated response for areas that will be impacted by the demonstrations.
Police forces have also been directed to respect the public's freedom to a peaceful assembly while conducting intelligence assessments and continuously monitoring possible threats.
The PNP Chief urged groups organizing rallies to maintain order and peace.
“We appeal to the organizers of these planned rallies to keep their activities peaceful and orderly. Do not allow your ranks to be infiltrated by provocateur,” Nartatez stated.
Additionally, he issued a warning that any violence or vandalism that might arise during protest activities will be dealt with by the authorities.
