MANILA, Philippines — The Senate continued its committee reorganization with elections for vice chairmanships and memberships following the appointment of the panels' respective chairpersons. Among the completed rosters are the Blue Ribbon Committee, the Committee on Basic Education, the Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs, the Committee on Culture and the Arts, and the Committee on Higher, Technical and Vocational Education. The reshuffle follows the assumption of new leadership in the chamber on Monday, May 11.
The powerful Blue Ribbon Committee, which oversees investigations and probes into government misconduct, elected Senator Pia Cayetano as chairperson, Senators Rodante Marcoleta and Jinggoy Estrada as vice chairpersons, and Senators Bong Go, Robinhood “Robin” Padilla, Mark Villar, Camille Villar, Chiz Escudero, and Imee Marcos as members.
The roster drew intense public scrutiny due to the inclusion of members with alleged involvement in past flood control anomalies and government-linked enterprise controversies.
Furthermore, Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda was elected chairperson of the Committee on Basic Education, with Padilla as vice chairperson. Marcoleta, Estrada, Go, Marcos, Pia Cayetano, Mark Villar, and Villanueva joined the panel as members.
The removal of the minority bloc's Senator Benigno “Bam” Aquino from the committee drew widespread disappointment due to the loss of a strong education advocate focused on free tuition and scholarship opportunities for students.
The reorganization of the Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs was also met with criticism when Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa was appointed chairperson in his first appearance in over six months. Senators Marcoleta, Estrada, and Go were elected vice chairpersons, while its members included Padilla and Marcos.
Public concerns pointed to Dela Rosa's chairmanship while facing a looming International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant as a named ‘co-perpetrator’ in the past Duterte administration’s bloody drug war. Critics also questioned the integrity and competence of the committee members in enforcing order amid heightened tensions within the Senate itself.
For the Committee on Culture and the Arts, Legarda was elected chairperson, with Padilla, Cayetano, Villanueva, Marcoleta, and Marcos as members. A committee vice chairperson has yet to be elected.
Moreover, the Committee on Higher, Technical and Vocational Education named Senator Villanueva as chairperson, Legarda as vice chairperson, and Cayetano, Go, Padilla, and Villar as members.
As the committee reorganization continues, speculation regarding the permanence of leadership positions continue to loom large amid alleged talks and bids for a new Senate President. Members of the chamber, particularly within the minority bloc, have neither confirmed nor denied the claims, but maintained that a new leadership coalition is “in the works.”
